About the Speaker

B. Tommie Usdin is President of Mulberry Technologies, Inc. in Rockville, Maryland. Mulberry Technologies is a consultancy specializing in SGML and XML design and training. Ms. Usdin specializes in applications design, Document Type Definition development, training, and database publishing. She developed a document analysis methodology called Rapid DTD Development (RDD) based on the principles of Joint Application Development, which is now widely used throughout the SGML industry. Ms. Usdin's recommendations on development approaches for a Legislative Branch wide SGML application are currently being in use by the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate. Ms. Usdin has developed XML DTDs for a major commercial publisher, who is developing XML versions of reference works in the biological sciences. Ms. Usdin led the team that developed the Pinnacles Component Information Standard for the semiconductor industry, an industry wide SGML application for the interchange of semiconductor documentation. Other recent projects include: design and development of electronic publishing systems for journals, product documentation, historical materials, reference works, and medical information. She has designed document interchange systems, database systems to support multi-media publishing, and integration of Commercial-off-the-shelf software. Ms. Usdin has designed SGML applications using a variety of SGML Application Standards including the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), the Electronic Manuscript (AAP) Standard, and the MIL-M-28001 (DoD) application standards. In addition, she has designed and implemented full-text and document surrogate retrieval systems, technical documentation delivery, document tracking, and subject access systems. Ms. Usdin has taught theory and techniques of database design, database searching, and design and development of subject access tools.

Ms. Usdin is a member of the XML Advisory Group; has been an active participant in SGML Open committee work since the consortium was founded in 1994; chaired SGML/XML'97, and co-chaired SGML'96, SGML'95, SGML'94 and SGML'93; was program chair for the Mid-Atlantic SGML Users Group in 1992 and 1993; and has spoken at meetings of the SGML Forum of New York, the Mid-Atlantic SGML Users Group, and the Northern California SGML Users Group as well as at International Markup, TechDoc, SGML'XX, SGML Europe, SGML Asia, Seybold conferences and meetings of the Association for Computing in the Humanities, Association for Computing Machines, and the American Society for Information Science.
