About the Event

Are you an expert?

The intrinsic need to grow and develop in a profession, i.e., to go beyond simply accumulating experience, is a hallmark of an expert. Experts address problems, whereas the "experienced nonexperts" carry out practiced routines. Experts also view professional development and their work as part of their definition of themselves.

Professional development is a combination of being interested in learning new things, learning them, putting them to use, and seeing what happens. The professional development process enables us to truly know what we are capable of doing beyond whatever we are doing now—and that is another hallmark of an expert.

We as technical communicators need the challenges that come when we stretch our knowledge of audience, content, and delivery systems—when we develop professionally.

So, are you an expert? If so, how does that affirmation change how you perceive yourself and how others perceive you in the workplace? What impact does it have on your value to your employer? And, how do you make sure that your boss' perceptions match yours?

Thea Teich, STC 1st Vice President, Southwestern Ohio Chapter, has 25 years of experience in marketing communication and technical writing. Since 1995, she has run Teich Technical and Marketing Communications, offering technical writing desktop publishing, and indexing services. She handles projects for clients in the software manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, environmental control, and financial services industries, to name a few. She has also developed courses and teaches marketing communication in the Information Technologies program at Cincinnati State Community and Technical College.

Thea's article on self-nurturing was published in the March 2002 issue of Intercom. She will serve as the national STC President in 2003.

To receive the lower price, advance reservations are REQUIRED for this event. Registration and payment must be received by Friday, September 20, at 5 p.m. Refunds will not be made after that date.
If you find that you cannot attend after registering, contact the Events Committee Manager as soon as possible. No shows that do not notify us that they need to cancel will be billed. See the Reservation and Cancellation Policies for more information.
