About the Telephone Seminar
Technical communicators are multitalented employees who are often underutilized. Our managers may not fully understand our profession or appreciate our skills. As a result, when times get tough, we can't count on them to go to bat for us.
To remain employed, to win recognition, to expand our role, we need to market our versatility and demonstrate how we can add value within our organizations. As a result, we can not only weather the stormy seas of corporate reorganizations, we can actually chart a rewarding career path for ourselves. This webinar will also help contract technical communicators beef up their resumes and increase their chances of being kept on board after their original project is completed.
This presentation will explore 10 ways you can use your talent and expertise to provide important services to your employer. It will also discuss how to market those services more effectively within your organization. For each area, suggestions on how to supplement your skill set are included as well.
A telephone seminar is much like a large conference call in which the speaker makes a presentation over the phone and invites listeners to join in a Q&A discussion.
About the Instructor
Holly Harkness is the technical communications manager at Mirant, an independent power company in Atlanta. She is also the current president of the Atlanta Chapter STC.
Holly was able to successfully market the skills of her technical communications team to fulfill a variety of roles outside the narrow confines of "technical writing."
Holly is a frequent presenter at STC events. Some of her previous programs included: "Strategies for Winning Recognition: Building a Visible, Viable, and Valuable Documentation Team"; "The Technical Communicator's Role in a Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance Project"; and "Writers at the Head of the Class: Preparing, Delivering, and Marketing Internal Business Writing Classes".

Registration
Registration is required for this event. To register for this event, complete the online Event Registration form.
Registration and cancellation deadline: 1 p.m., 25 October 2006. Payments by check or PayPal must be received by this date. Payment by cash or check may also be made at the door.
Admission fees help to offset the costs of our events. Fees may vary from time to time because of the costs of food and beverages, room rental, and other services. Our attendees pay slightly different fees depending on whether they are members, nonmembers, students, chapter volunteers, or walk-ins. We also sometimes offer a program-only option for programs that are not held in restaurants.
If your presence is necessary at the event, you are entitled to a reduced admission fee for that event. If you would like to help and thereby qualify for this discount, contact the Events Committee Manager. Note that we do not accept last-minute volunteers unless we have an unanticipated need for extra help.
Confirmed event reviewers are eligible for free [or reduced] entry fee in exchange for writing a column for the newsletter about the event. If you are interested in volunteering to report on this event, please confirm the availability of the event reviewer role by contacting the Newsletter Manager.
Payment
You may pay by sending a check through the U.S. Mail or by making a secure online payment through our PayPal page using your credit card, debit card, bank account, or by paying money from a funded PayPal account. (Using PayPal allows you to make purchases without revealing your credit card number or financial information to us.) We also accept cash or checks at the door.
If you have already registered and would like to submit a payment by check or through our PayPal page, see the Event Registration page for more detailed information about making a payment.
Cancellations
To cancel a registration, contact the Events Committee Manager as soon as possible. No shows who do not notify us that they need to cancel will be billed.
Current Chapter Volunteers
Your STC chapter is able to provide excellent events in part because of its many volunteers. A chapter volunteer is a member of the Washington DC chapter who is actively providing time and talents to events held in the current chapter year. The chapter year begins on July 1 of each year and ends on June 30 of the following year.
For some events, a reduced fee is available to current chapter volunteers. To be eligible for this reduced rate, you must be someone who meets at least one condition in the following definition of current chapter volunteers:
- People who arrange in advance to help organize and run the event that they attend at the volunteer rate
- Active committee managers and members
- Judges in the current year's competitions
- Members of the current year's administrative council
We also offer a volunteer rate to fellows and associate fellows in recognition of their years of service to STC.
