About the Event
Most technical writers do single sourcing at some level; some do quite a lot of it. But most do it with tools that are not designed to facilitate reuse of content.
The most common approach involves creating content for one purpose, then copying or transforming it to a new purpose or format. High-end tools may make it easier to manage content at a document level, but most do not enable writers to manage small units of content and publish easily to multiple output.
The AuthorIT application was designed with one purpose: to encourage reuse of content across multiple documents and formats. Creating single source content challenges us to work in a new way; but using an application that is designed for that purpose makes the transition easier.
This presentation will explore strategies for moving to a single source model gradually. We will survey types of content that occur in technical writing projects, identify types of content that are easy candidates for reuse, and show how an application like AuthorIT can be used to implement reuse in a way that technical writers can appreciate. We will then show how additional reuse and repurposing can be added over time, gradually moving towards a full scale model of reuse.
