About the Event

What do publications managers look for when interviewing candidates? How do they evaluate their staff members? Come share your thoughts and ideas and gain some perspective from a panel of four experienced documentation managers.

About the Speakers

Candace Jenkins
Documentation Manager at Integic, a Northrop Grumman Company

Candace (Candy) Jenkins is currently the Documentation Manager for the Healthcare Practice Area of an IT company whose largest current project is creating healthcare management software for the DoD and VA. During this time in her position she has managed a staff ranging from one to five people and has been responsible for creating and documenting process improvement and workflow processes for the Documentation Department. She is scheduled to complete her Master's Degree in Professional Writing and Editing at George Mason University in May 2006. Recent publications include The Encyclopedia of Retirement and Finance, where she served as an Associate Editor.

Buckley Jeppson
Documentation Manager at the Ancon Group

Buckley Jeppson is the Documentation Manager at the Ancon Group, a technical consulting firm. He currently leads a small team of technical writers at the United States Mint. He managed a group of technical writers at EMC Corporation's Alexandria office for six years. He has led documentation teams on a variety of short-term contracts including CH2M Hill engineering firm and the Small Business Administration. He served as Director of The Preservation Press, the book publishing arm of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, for five years and as Editorial and Production Manager of Gibbs Smith, Publisher, for ten years.

Heli Roosild
Documentation Manager at QuadraMed Corporation

Heli [as in "HELIcopter"] Roosild is currently the Manager of Documentation and Distribution at QuadraMed Corporation, a Reston-based company that specializes in healthcare management software for community hospitals. In this role, she manages eight local writers and three remote writers, as well as a Distribution staff of two at the Reston location—but also act as a workaday writer. While her management role at QuadraMed is a recent development, she has previously served as Manager of Information Development at TREEV, Inc. (formerly Network Imaging, Inc.), where she managed from two to eight writers over the course of nine years.

Sarah Gill
(Former) Documentation Manager at EMC (Documentum)

Sarah Gill was the documentation manager at EMC Corporation for over six years. During her tenure there, she managed a group of writers ranging in size from three to ten writers. She has been the top level technical publications management for her company, and she has been a middle manager within a larger organization-wide technical publications group. Her management activities have included integrating writers joining her company through acquisitions, managing changes associate with joining existing publications organizations in parent companies, managing localization and single sourcing efforts, contributing to organization process development, and remote management of writers.
