Workshop Description
This workshop covers project management basics, with a focus on managing documentation projects. Topics include initial project planning and research, developing estimates, assigning resources, project scheduling, monitoring the project, and contingency planning. This workshop includes demonstrations and hands-on exercises for participants. This workshop does not cover other aspects of management, such as personnel management or strategic planning. Various tools and techniques are discussed, and references for additional information are provided.

About the Speaker

Charles Fisher is the Documentation Manager at Datatel, Inc., a leading developer of information management solutions for higher education. He has almost 20 years of experience in the Technical Communication field, and eight years of management experience. He currently manages twelve technical communication professionals, who develop the information products that accompany Datatel's software. He manages and coordinates the documentation needs for as many as 60 concurrent software development projects.
In addition to his work at Datatel, Charles teaches courses in technical writing, software documentation, and written communication skills. He holds an MA in Professional Writing and an MS in Technology Management, both from George Mason University. He has presented workshops and sessions at many STC annual and regional conferences since 1991. He is an active member and Associate Fellow of the Society for Technical Communication. He has also held many positions at the Society level and within the Washington DC Chapter. He currently serves on the Society's Conference Advisory Committee.
