Topic: "Implementing Context-Sensitive Help"

About the Event

Several aspects of implementing help for applications fall in the realm of programmers—chief among them, the implementation of context-sensitive help. It is, however, often the case that it is the help author, primarily a technical writer, who really needs to know how the help system works and make sure that it is implemented correctly. Besides that, many developers don't even know the basics of connecting help up to an application and often look to the help author for details. What's a poor tech writer to do? This session will focus on explaining in layman's terms most of the common chores of implementing context sensitive help from a programmer's point of view as well as the help author's. Paul will also gladly field any other technically oriented questions regarding help systems in this session.

About the Speaker

photo of Paul O'Rear

Paul A. O'Rear is the owner of Helpful Solutions, a consulting and software development service specializing in custom Windows help development and all manners of other custom software development. He first got interested in Windows help systems in the late 1980s. While messing around in Windows/286 and Windows 3.0 he discovered the joy of hypertext. Since that time Paul has learned several programming languages and much about Windows programming in general, but his core interest has continued to be in working with WinHelp, HTML Help, and related technologies. Perhaps best known for his knowledge of WinHelp/HTML Help internals and contributions to several Help support newsgroups, Paul enjoys life outside of hyperspace as well—particularly while playing his Rickenbacker bass guitar or watching good sci-fi.
