About the Event

In a panel discussion, we will explore Section 508, the U.S. Federal government requirement that electronic information technology be accessible to people who have disabilities.

Our presenters will demonstrate the following:

  • How Section 508 differs from accessibility
  • How to evaluate and remediate your website or software
  • How to sell Section 508 to your organization
  • When to seek professional help

Target Audience

This session is for technical communicators who perform work that is delivered electronically to the U.S. Federal government, and for people interested in making their work more accessible.

About the Speakers

Bill Killam is the president of User-Centered Design (UCD) at https://www.user-centereddesign.com, which represents over 25 years of experience in the design, development, and evaluation of user interfaces of all types. The company specializes in adding Human Factors Engineering into design processes to facilitate a more "user-centered" approach to product development. Bill has degrees in both engineering and psychology, and is certified in Human Factors Engineering by the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics (BCPE).

Bill is the past president of the local chapters of the Human Factors and Ergonomic Society and the Usability Professionals Association and is on the board of the local chapter of DC CHI. In addition to his consulting practice, he teaches Human Factors Engineering and Usability at the University of Maryland and George Mason University.

Cynthia Lockley is STC WDC's Web diva and an active member and Web diva of the STC Accessibility Special Interest Group (SIG). She is a versatile business communicator with experience managing, writing, editing, designing, and publishing award-winning World Wide Web (WWW) pages for Internet and intranet use, and with software and hardware documentation for commercial and military use. She has team leadership and management experience in a variety of fields such as research and development, engineering, manufacturing, and education.

Kathy Bine is an award-winning developer of Internet, electronic, and printed user information products, primarily for government clients. In her 15 years of experience, she has designed websites and HTML-based user information systems for software that is served over the Internet. Kathy evaluates software and Web-based applications for compliance with Section 508 accessibility standards, and has conducted usability evaluations. Kathy performs Section 508 evaluation and remediation on websites and PDFs for the U.S. government. Kathy has taught at George Washington University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Graduate School, and has presented at professional conferences, including the STC conference. She works for ICF Information Technology, a subsidiary of ICF Consulting.

Fees and Registration

Group 1 Software employees may attend the event at no cost. Please submit the online reservation form so that the event planner knows that you are coming.

Admission Fees

$10 STC members
$15 Nonmembers
$5 Current STC WDC chapter volunteers
$20 Late registration and walk-ins

Admission fees help to offset the costs of our programs. Fees may vary from program to program because of the costs of food and beverages, room rental, and other services. Our attendees pay slightly different fees depending on whether they are members, nonmembers, students, chapter volunteers, or walk-ins. We also sometimes offer a program-only option for programs that are not held in restaurants.

If you are involved in the planning or production of an event, you are entitled to free admission at that event. If you would like to help and thereby qualify for this discount, contact the Events Committee Manager at . Note that we do not accept last-minute volunteers unless we have an unanticipated need for extra help.

Registration

You are strongly encouraged to register and pay by Monday, 8 December. All information published under Advance reservation policy is applicable to this event.

You may pay by sending a check through the U.S. Mail or by making a secure online payment through our PayPal page using your credit card, debit card, bank account, or by paying money from a funded PayPal account. Cancellations

To cancel a registration, contact the Events Committee Manager as soon as possible. No shows who do not notify us that they need to cancel will be billed.

Advance Reservation Policy

We encourage all attendees to register in advance. If you are unable to register by the deadline, you can still attend the event as a walk-in, at the cost listed under Admission fees.

Restrictions:

  • We cannot guarantee that food will be available for walk-ins.
  • We do not provide refunds for late arrivals.
  • We reserve the right to bill those who register for a program, do not pre-pay, and do not attend the program.
